CAN YOU CONTINUE YOUR READING HABIT DURING TRAVEL?
Is reading helpful during travel?
The answer could be either yes or no, or possibly something in between.…..
Reading plays a cardinal role in one’s life. It develops
knowledge, gives authority to act, and nourishes the mind. It helps to understand
the world around us. It improves concentration, vocabulary, writing abilities, and creativity. Sometimes it also reduces anxiety and sadness.
The same thing happens when we travel.
Is it really true? Well, I don’t think so. I will tell you why and how. Now just focus on the benefits of reading.
Reading while traveling can be a great way to pass the time and make the journey more enjoyable. It can also help you relax and unwind, especially during long flights or train rides. Reading can also be a great way to learn more about the places you are visiting or immerse yourself in a different culture.
Benefits of Reading While Traveling:
Relaxation and Escape:
Cultural Immersion:
Entertainment on the Go:
Mindful Moments:
Inspiration and Reflection:
Let's flip the page:
I agree with all of these because I examined them and found them helpful for those who have no issues with travel. But my opinion is different. Let me tell you why.
Yes. When you travel, due to the motion of the vehicle, you
experience jerks. Because of that, the distance between your eyes and the paper
keeps on varying and every time this occurs, your eye muscles have to readjust
to focus on the paper. This creates strain which ultimately causes fatigue. When
I travel I never enjoy reading or screen time. It was ok for just about 5 to 10
minutes but after that, I started to feel numb and dizzy. In my case except reading,
listening helps.
I pinpointed some drawbacks of reading during travel. Keep
these in mind.
1. Motion Sickness:
Reading while in motion, such as on a bus, train, or car, can
exacerbate motion sickness for some individuals. According to a study published
in the Journal of Applied Physiology, reading while in motion can increase
feelings of nausea and discomfort, especially in susceptible individuals. This
can lead to a less enjoyable travel experience and may even result in vomiting
or dizziness.
2. Distraction from
Surroundings:
Immersing oneself in a book while traveling may lead to a
disconnection from the surrounding environment, causing travelers to miss out
on important sights, sounds, and experiences. Research conducted by
psychologists at Harvard University suggests that excessive screen time,
including reading on electronic devices, can lead to a phenomenon known as
"unintentional blindness," where individuals fail to notice unexpected
stimuli in their environment due to cognitive overload.
3. Risk of Theft or
Loss:
Carrying valuable books or electronic reading devices while
traveling poses a risk of theft or loss. According to travel safety experts,
tourists are often targeted by pickpockets and thieves, especially in crowded
tourist areas or on public transportation. Losing a cherished book or expensive
e-reader can not only be financially costly but also emotionally distressing,
detracting from the overall travel experience.
4. Limited
Interaction with Locals:
Reading while traveling may limit opportunities for spontaneous interactions with locals and fellow travelers. According to a study published in the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, engaging in activities that require focused attention, such as reading, may reduce social interactions and hinder cultural immersion. This can prevent travelers from fully experiencing the richness and diversity of the destinations they visit and may lead to feelings of isolation or loneliness.
5. Eyestrain and Fatigue:
Extended periods of reading, particularly on electronic devices,
can lead to eyestrain and fatigue. According to the American Optometric
Association, staring at screens for prolonged periods can cause symptoms such
as dry eyes, headaches, and blurred vision, collectively known as digital eye
strain. This discomfort can detract from the enjoyment of reading and may even
impact overall travel enjoyment.
My Thoughts:
While reading during travel offers many benefits, travelers need to be mindful of these potential drawbacks and take
steps to mitigate them. By balancing reading with other activities, staying
aware of their surroundings, and taking breaks to rest their eyes, travelers can enjoy
the benefits of reading while minimizing its negative impacts on their travel
experience.
